WinMonitor FAQ
Are all logical volumes automatically monitored?
Yes.
Are all Auto-Start services automatically monitored?
Yes.
Are all WMI connection failures alerted on?
Yes.
Does it have a GUI?
No, it doesn't need one. It is scheduled via Task Scheduler.
Can I monitor Manual-Start services?
Yes. Just specify them in a csv list after each host name in the .ini file preceeded by a + sign
Can I exclude services from monitoring?
Yes. Just specify them in a csv list after each host name in the .ini file preceeded by a - sign
How many servers can I monitor with WinMonitor?
WinMonitor20 monitors up to 20 Windows Hosts; WinMonitor10 up to 10 Hosts, and WinMonitor5 up to 5.
How to I install it?
Just unzip the .exe and the.ini file to any directory, configure the .ini file, create a scheduled task and you're done in as little as 5 minutes.
Which directory can I install it into?
Any directory you like.
Can I change the directory once installed?
Yes, just copy the .exe and .ini file to any directory and update the path in the scheduled task.
How much is it?
WinMonitor20 is US$15, WinMonitor10 is US$10 and WinMonitor5 is US$7. Thats only about US$1 per host!
Does it require annual licence renewals?
No, it's a one time purchase and the licence doesn't expire.
What limitations does the free download version have?
Only partial alert data is included in the email alert. All alert data is however logged to current.log and archive.log.
How do I configure it?
Using the one and only .ini file. The design of EasyWinTools ensures easy configuration. Just open the .ini file using Notepad or similar, and type in servernames [can be Netbios names, FQDN names, or IP addresses] and that's it for the serverlist. Specify values for the other attributes like DiskSpacePercentFullThreshold, EmailServer etc. Values are not case sensitive, and spaces are optional. i.e:
"EmailAlertingEnabled = true" is equivalent to "EmailAlertingEnabled=true"
Full Details in the Documentation Section.
Does it supress duplicate alerts
?
Yes, if an alert condition has been detected, then future detections of the same alert condition will not generate duplicate alerts. Once the alert condition is repaired, the duplicate supression is automatically disabled, until the alert happens again.
Does it tell me when the problem is resolved?
Yes. You can enable alerts for when the problem is resolved by setting AlertWhenRepaired=true in the .ini file. This is a great feature for 3am to let you get back into bed instead of the car, when a service has failed temporarily and then started again :)
Will it run through firewalls
?
It can, as long as WMI queries are allowed through. The recommended configuration however is to run an instance of WinMonitor within your DMZ and allow smtp alerts to your mail server via a single port.
Will it monitor workgroup hosts?
Yes. A typical configuration would be to schedule WinMonitor to run using a domain service account which has permission to perform WMI queries on the hosts. This should suit most situations. On those hosts that are part of workgroups, or other domains, then create a local account using the same name and password as the domain service account, and then one WinMonitor instance can then monitor both the trusted, and 'non-trusted' hosts.
What permission is required?
The recommended permission for the service account used to schedule WinMonitor is Administrator on all Monitored hosts. This can be reduced if needed as long as WMI read permission is allowed. Full details are in the Documentation section.
If your Email Server requires authentication, then the permission to send email will be required for the service account.
Can it alert to multiple recipients
?
Yes, both single and multiple email recipients are supported.
Can I have one configuration during the day and one at night?
Yes. This would be implemented via separate instances of the .ini file which can be swapped over at certain times of the day via a scheduled task.
Does it log errors
?
All activity is logged to the current.log [this scan only], and the archive.log [all scans]. Either log can be disabled.
Can I disable email alerting
?
Yes, just specify EmailAlertingEnabled = false in the .ini file.
Can I configure disk thresholds
?
Yes. The default Percent Full threshold is 90% for all logical volumes. This can be changed to any value you choose.
How do I register WinMonitor
?
Once you have purchased online, you will receive a registration email listing your registration code. Start WinMonitor from the command line using the /Register switch, type in your Customername and Registration code, and you're done.
Is an agent install required?
No. WinMonitor is agentless and is based on remote WMI queries of the root/cimv2 namespace.
